It is not possible to give a standard price for transcription work since this is determined by a number of variables. The industry standard for transcription ratios is a minimum of 4:1. i.e. 4 hours transcription time for every 1 hour audio time. This ratio would apply for example where a one-to-one interview is being conducted, with good recording quality, minimal (or no background noise), a paced delivery (comparable say to the style of a newsreader presenting a news item) and where only an edited transcript is required (i.e. the content of the interview is required). At the other extreme would be a recording that is of a group interaction, of poor quality (distortion e.g. hiss), with the interview being conducted in a public (possibly open air) venue, a rapid and possibly garbled verbal delivery and where the client requires the inclusion of “erm”, “ah”, “you know”, “sort of” and other semi voluntary inclusions together with indications of emotional nuance (e.g. nervously, jokingly etc). Also where the interviewer/participants may not be native English speakers this may add time to the transcription process.
We recognise that the ideal conditions rarely obtain but that in these instances additional time will be involved in producing a transcription that produces a serviceable rendition of the recording.
To summarise:
Factors increasing the ratio time from a minimum of 4:1 are:-
1) Multiple participants.
2) Poor quality of digital recording.
3) Intrusive background noise.
4) Rapid and possibly garbled speech delivery.
5) Literal as opposed to edited or semi edited transcription.
6) Accents.
The simplest means for determining the price is to send us a sample file via the upload link on the website. We will then confirm the price for that piece of work (and for any subsequent if they are reasonably comparable). Where other projects are of a significantly variable quality we will notify you in advance of any price change and await your confirmation to go ahead.
